Reindeer Moss (Cladonia rangiferina)among other related Cladonia species. Despite its common name, it is not a true moss or plant, but a species of fruticose (bushy) lichen. Natural live reindeer moss is pale silvery-gray, ash-gray, or light greenish-gray or a dusty brown beige. It's normal condition is soft, spongy, and pliable. Under hot and dry conditions, it dehydrates and quickly becomes crisp, brittle, and stiff, but instantly rehydrates when exposed to moisture or water without harmful effects to the plant. #1.
